Who needs to complete this module? | Everyone who works in mental health and learning disabilities and delivers direct patient care. Note: We offer this module to everyone in this group, regardless of whether the Trust that they are working in is contracted under the HTE TWS I framework. |
How frequently should refresher training take place? | As per the HTE TWS I framework refresher training should take place every year. |
How long is this training? | 6 hours |
What does the module cover? | Break away training is a foundational level training that provides some practical experience of ‘getting away’ from a potentially violent situation. This course is delivered to General Services Association (GSA) standards by GSA tutors. Learning outcomes - by the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- identify factors that may place individuals at increased risk
- recognise personal skills that can enhance or detract from maintaining safety
- discuss systems for reporting and gaining support

| • | demonstrate safe practice of personal safety breakaway skills using the principles of speed, skill and surprise |
| • | demonstrate the biomechanics of commonly used breakaway techniques |
| • | recognise the importance of documentation in justifying your actions |
| • | apply NEAR (Negotiate, Exit, Assistance and Reasonable force) principles. |
