The Gateway EU Programme has been created for UK citizens, or those with the Right to Work in the UK who have completed a medical degree within the last 12 months, or who are in the final 6 months of studies at a European University. This programme allows you to gain experience as a junior Doctor in the NHS.
While we don't guarantee a placement, as we work with many Trusts in Scotland, Wales and England, if you are flexible in where you are willing to work this can increase your chances of getting a placement. We will send you opportunities by email and you can express your interest by replying with your CV. Your CV should include:
- relevant courses
- relevant clinical attachments
- any NHS experience working as a Doctor
If you are successful, you will need to provide:
- A full (not provisional) GMC registration
- Right to work in the UK (such as a UK or Irish passport or settlement visa)
- A primary qualification recognised by the GMC
As part of your application, we will also perform:
- A DBS check
- An Occupational Health Check
- An interview through Microsoft Teams
- References checks
You will also need to complete mandatory training before starting. This will consist of online training and an induction with your Trust. This is in line with NHS guidelines and Trust standards.
The Gateway programme is usually completed over 24 months. During this period, you should be aiming to complete your CREST sign off. This will allow you to enter into specialist training should you decide to take this route.
If you have 1 year of experience in the NHS working as a Doctor, you can join at FY2 level be employed on a 12 month contract instead. Alternatively if you have been placed in a specialist Hospital (e.g Paediatrics or Orthopaedics) for a 12-month period, you can have a secondary placement in an acute setting to gain your Certificate of Readiness to Enter Specialty Training (CREST) sign off.
