The modules are not just for those carrying out transfusions.
Even if you don’t administer blood transfusions, you must complete blood transfusion training if you work in a role that may involve:
- Working around patients who have or may receive blood transfusions,
- Blood sampling,
- Transporting of blood products,
- The decision to transfuse, or
- Administration of blood components.
This can include people working in Healthcare Support Worker roles.
What does Blood Transfusion training include?
Blood transfusions can save lives, but they also have risks. To support you to be able to act in an emergency, the Blood Transfusion course will provide you with:
- Knowledge of potential complications. Anyone caring for a patient during or after a transfusion must be aware of potential complications (for example, an allergic reaction, fever, or skin rash).
- Knowledge of how to act in an emergency. No matter your role you may be faced with an emergency situation and you should feel sufficiently prepared.
- Knowledge of how to support shared decision making. Anyone can be asked by a patient for their medical opinion. You must be prepared so patients can make an informed decision whether to consent to a transfusion.
