I’m on the HCSWD programme. How do I book shifts?

Whilst you are on the HCSWD programme, you do not need to book your own shifts. You will still have to release them for payment, however, using My:Bank. For more information on this, see our How do I get paid? article.

The first 37.5 hours of your Induction week is paid at the rate advertised on the job advert. We authorise this payment once you have worked these shifts.

Your mentor or Ward Manager will book your placement hours to ensure you will be working alongside experienced staff on a rota. This is so you can complete your placement hours and workbook at the same time. You need to complete 390 placement hours for our 3-month ‘Experience Based’ programme. For our 6-month ‘Values Based’ programme, you need to complete 780 placement hours.

Whilst on the programme, you cannot book your own shifts or change your shifts. Any shift you work must be with someone qualified to train you and will be dependent on the needs of the Trust – this may include earlies, lates, nights and weekends. You may ask your Ward Manager for flexibility, but they are not obliged to change the time or day of your shifts while you are on the programme. As such, you must ensure you are fully flexible to meet the requirements of the programme.

If you have more questions, we offer a Trainee Q and A session. At these sessions, you can ask anything, but we may not be able to discuss your specific situation. These Q and A sessions usually run on the first Tuesday of every month at 1 pm. To sign up, please click here.

Please note: You cannot work at other NHS Trusts whilst on placement. Once you have successfully graduated from the programme, your codes will be updated, and you will be able to choose your own shifts and locations to work.
