Please note: we cannot offer any financial advice but can signpost you for your appropriate queries.

What is a workplace pension scheme?

A workplace pension scheme is a retirement savings plan where money is deducted directly from your wages. Your employer also makes a contribution to your pension through the scheme.

Who provides the NHS Professionals pension and what type of pension scheme is it?

Royal London is our pension provider since 1 March 2022.  The pension scheme is a Group Personal Pension (GPP) – this refers to a type of workplace pension set up by the employer.

How do I join the NHS Professionals pension scheme?

You can choose to join our pension scheme to help you save for your retirement. If you would like to join, you will need to opt-in as it is not an auto enrolment. You can do this by completing the Online Joining Form.

What am I required to contribute into the Royal London Pension Scheme?

The payroll team will base your pension contribution calculations on your basic pay. This is your Pensionable Pay (pensionable pay is your basic salary)

  • You are asked to contribute a minimum of 3% of basic pay, but you can ask to pay more if you wish
  • NHSP will match your payment up to a maximum of 6% of your basic gross pay

Your pension contributions come from your net pay, after income tax. This is called relief at source. Your pension provider will claim 20% tax relief from HMRC and adds it to your pension. Please note: If you pay more than 20% income tax, you can reclaim the extra relief directly from HMRC.

Where can I find more information about my Royal London pension?

We recommend visiting the Royal London Pension Hub. If you can't find what you are looking for on the pensions hub, you can call the Royal London member helpdesk on 0345 602 1885. They are open 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday.
