What documents do I need for a DBS renewal check?

This is for DBS Renewals. If you are applying to join NHSP, please see our article I am completing a new application to join NHSP. What documents do I need to show you to prove my Right to Work in the UK? as the document guidance will also include your DBS check.

When providing us with documents, please ensure they are:

  • originals and not copies or photos,
  • valid, and
  • in your current name

If any of your documents are not in your current name, please provide a Marriage Certificate or Deed Poll showing your name change.

Please provide a Group 1 document. These are:

  • A valid passport,
  • A UK Photo Driving Licence,
  • A UK Adoption Certificate, or
  • A UK or Irish Birth Certificate (issued less than 1 year after your birth).

Please also supply 2 additional documents from either Group 1Group 2a or Group 2b.

  • At least one of these additional documents must show your current address.

This process is slower than if you provided a Group 1 document. If you do not provide a Group 1 document, we are legally required to use an external ID validation service to check your application. You may be asked to complete a form at your document check appointment to give us consent to do this.

If you cannot provide a Group 1 document, please provide a Group 2a document instead. These are:

  • A valid non-UK Photo Driving Licence,
  • A UK Paper Driving Licence,
  • A UK or Irish Birth Certificate (issued more than 1 year after your birth),
  • A UK Marriage or Civil Partnership Certificate,
  • An HM Forces ID Card, or
  • A Firearms Licence.

Please also supply 2 additional documents from either Group 2a or Group 2b.

  • At least one of these additional documents must show your current address.

If you are a non-UK national, you must provide a Primary Document.

Our most commonly seen Primary Documents are:

  • A current Irish Passport or Passport Card,
  • A current passport, or
  • An eVisa (also known as a Share Code) from the gov.uk website that we have checked.
    • To provide the correct Share Code, please choose the 'To prove my immigration status for anything else' option after supplying your personal details.

    • All Immigration Status Share Codes start with the letter 'S'. Please ensure you have given us the correct code before submitting.

    • Your Share Code document must include a picture of yourself. If your picture isn't clear, please update it on the gov.uk website.
    • For more information on eVisas, please see this video from the Home Office:

Please also supply 2 additional Supporting Documents from either Group 1Group 2a or Group 2b.

  • At least one of these additional documents must show your current address.
  • A passport can only be used as a Supporting Document if it’s not already been used as a Primary Document.
